Physically active commutes are environmentally friendly while promoting the wellbeing of employees and generating cost-savings for companies. A responsible employer encourages employees to make smart choices in terms of mobility on commutes and business trips. Sustainable modes of travel, such as cycling, walking and public transport, increase employees’ everyday physical activity and are also the best options in terms of the environment. A physically active employee is healthier and more alert. Bicycles that employees can loan to run work-related errands encourage them to try moving around using muscle power. Cost-savings are generated as the need for parking and the amount of reimbursable mileage expenses decrease. Employers can provide motorists with driving style training and purchase fuel-efficient vehicles for corporate use. Smart commuting helps companies achieve their environmental and energy efficiency goals and objectives relating to wellbeing at work. Investing in smart commuting is also a recruitment asset and improves corporate image.

Do you know how your company’s employees commute to and from work? Corrective adjustments to commuting do not always require major action; even small measures are helpful. Facts on different smart commuting alternatives are easily available online at (in Finnish). In addition, employers can use the brief survey included in the online materials to explore the baseline situation in commuting.

The online material on smart commuting was produced as part of a project coordinated by Motiva Ltd entitled ‘Workplaces promoting smart commuting’. The project partners include the Finnish Transport Agency, the Finnish Road Safety Council, the Fit for Life programme, Helsinki Region Transport (HSL), and the Finnish Transport Safety Agency (Trafi).
